My Story

It is better to not know what the future holds.  We make our plans and they change in the twinkling of an eye.

Perchance you take a walk along a path by the river Thames, and you find a bench dedicated to the memory of a certain citizen of the town of Shepperton.  His name is Ian Squire, my son, who was a true believer in Jesus Christ.  He took teams of Christians to Africa  to provide sight not only for the Physically, but also to the spiritually blind.

My husband, another Ian  was getting on in years, and Ian and I had decided to build another flat above Ian’s optician shop for we could see that my husband’s health was failing.and it would be good for for me to live close to him.  Alas it took one bullet to change everything.  Ian was murdered in the Niger Delta  – a very remote area in Nigeria. 

We got the news that 4 hostages had been taken, a Doctor and his wife, Ian and an optometrist Eventually pictures came on our tv screens, but there was no Ian!  Where was he?  What had happened to him?  I had been praying for his release during the past 2 weeks. Later on the story unfolded. The Doctor and Shirley, his wife who is a nurse described the event in their book entitled “Counting the  Cost”, a very moving true story.  If ever you read this book you will find it very challenging.

What was my reaction when I discovered that Ian was dead?  I wondered what they had done with his body.  Where was he?
I shared my thoughts with Philip, Ian’s brother.  He advised me not to think about these things.  He described it as a very dark place.  So I turned to Jesus and His word which is in Luke chapter 24 verses 1 to 6.  He is not here.  He has risen.  These words have been such a comfort to me knowing that he is alive and in the presence of Jesus, for it is through His death that we are made alive in Him.  Yes  there is sorrow for a lost loved one, but for those who truly believe in Jesus we have the gift of life and a hope for the future to see our loved one and to be in a place where there is no more death, pain  or sorrow. The love of Jesus was so great for His creation that He was willing to suffer death on a cross at Calvary for you and me.He is the Saviour of the World, and  calls each one of us by name.  “Come!
Open up your hearts for me so that I may come in.  Perhaps it is time for you to act.

Perhaps you are wondering what happened to Ian, my husband .  I lost both my Ian’s within 2 weeks of each other.  A double whammy you might say.  The Lord is my comfort and strength.  He will never leave me or foresake me.  Hallelujah Amen.
